Not quite the 3fidi 350

Yesterday Craig, Cath, JP, Stacie, Bruce, John and I set out on the not quite 3fidi 350.  ABC studios, Uriarra Crossing, Mountain Creek Rd, Yass, Gunning, Gundaroo, Good Brother. 200km all up.  Bruce disappeared somewhere in O’Connor (?!?).  John absented himself around Stromlo and then there were five.

The Mountain Creek Rd was its usual pretty self.   JP acted surprised when I told him we were riding past Rupert Murdoch’s property, Cavan Station, where Sarah O’Hare and Lachlan Murdoch got married. I think JP thought  he was still in with a chance with Sarah.  The climb out of Burrinjuck is still one of the best in Australia with a European-like grade and curves and picturesque views. At Yass there was a ten minute stop for drinks and Stacie left us to ride home.   Here is the long and winding road between Yass and Gunning.

At Gunning, after 134km, JP and Craig were still contesting sprint point at the railway bridge,

Brunch was at Gunning where a caramel slice, a piece of carrot cake and a ham and cheese toastie were consumed. Cath was suffering and ate little. She was suffering even more on the return to Canberra with cramps. It was a long trip home for her. At Good Brother we got a free muffin each as a prize for the 200km.  I think I will pay for one next time….

It was great weather and a fine ride.

Dodging deer with the Fredericksburg bunch

On Tuesday day night, I took the rental bike out with the local bunch here in the Texas hill country. Being a town of 10,000 I expected a casual relaxed ride – it was for the first 5 kms. After that, it was an average of 35kmh over rolling hills and along country lanes. Deer on the side of the road slowed us down at times. They don’t seem any smarter than kangaroos and there are a lot of them. Hit one of them at speed and it is, "Oh dear".

We got back after an hour and a half ride. It has since been explained to me that the guy on the right front with the serious legs is a national level 50yr plus mtb rider. The guy on the left is same age but national level cycle cross. That explains what they strung me out even though I largely wheelsucked since I had no idea where I was going. Well that was my excuse.
