It was a cold start to the crit, with no warm-up for me or Craig, of course there were a few riders that had ridden to the event and were rearing to go from the gun.
There was no waiting for anybody, and with a nasty wind across the track, people soon started to pop off the back.
I made sure I was always at the front covering any move and ended up by myself off the front for a bit before another very fast rider, Paul, came across and joined me.
The two of us managed to then work together for the rest of the race.
We constantly monitored where the chasing bunch was, keeping a constant distance and noticing people were still popping off the back of the chase (including Craig).
It wasn’t until the 2nd last lap that we managed to put more distance in between us and the chase, then we knew we had the first two places covered. Now it was a question of who would take the glory. I was starting to feel the lactate boiling over in my legs, and was about to ask Paul to take it easy and that I would give him 1st spot, but then we crossed the line for the bell-lap.
Right it would be on for young & old…well, mainly old, allas I ended up being the one with my nose in the wind leading the sprint… doh! Second place for me, not enough power left to stop Paul from coming around me in the last 50 meters.
2nd for Bleeksie!
