After the Stelvio ride, we headed into the Dolomites to do some walking, climbing and riding. We managed to get the walk done. But then the weather turned feral. So we headed up through Austria and then all the way across Germany looking for sun. We found it in the Black Forest, near the border with France. There we did a 160km ride through the forests, farmland and villages. Though not as hilly as the rides in the Alps, we still managed 2500m of climbing for our efforts – some of it on hills of 18%! At the end of it, we retired to Freudenstadt for a refreshing German ale and some Maultaschen – large, hearty pork and spinach ravioli, also known as ‘God trickster’ because they hid the eating of meat during Lent. Yum.
