We were in Strahan for the last stage (#7) of the Pure Wildside MTB race for a 34km loop with nearly half of it along a beach and some sandy tracks and corrugated gravel roads. Due to the extreme head winds that would have buffeted us on the beach they decided to reverse the race direction. I was placed 5th at the start of the stage and thought it would be my kind of day, being fairly flat an all, but keeping a good position on the way to the beach proofed too much for my legs and on the 7km beach section alone I lost 5 minutes on my category leaders and slipped from 5th to a final result of 6th in Super Masters (50-59yrs).
I got close a couple of times but will need to train hard to get ready for the Mont24.
