After our ride in the Vercors (France), we headed through our old haunts in the Savoie and on to the upper Valais in Switzerland. Our aim was to do a 160km ride over three 2,000m-plus cols – the Furka, the Susten and the Grimsel passes. All up, there were four thousand metres of climbing. The Furka and Grimasel passes were great; the Susten was like a twenty kilomtre version of the Colombiere (Bleeksie and Matt know what I mean – the ever-seen, never-realised summit). But all round, the views were spectacular; the roads typically wide and smooth. Here’s Cath’s ride in photos:
Grimselpass switchbacks loom over the midsection of the first climb. We’ll come down those.
Cath gives the thumbs up for the switchbacks on the Furkapass (green slope in background).
On the trail of Auric Goldfinger and Mr Bond – Hotel Belevedere, nearing top of the Furkapass.
Cath at the start of the Susten pass – a series of twisting tunnels. Thereafter, the suffering begins…
Welcome respite – a flat – near the top of the Grimsel pass.
