So there’s an Election??

A quick skim over the websites of the majors reveals not much joy on the subject of cycling.

First, the Australian Greens show a little interest with – ‘The Australian Greens want – ….. 26. more cycle ways and footpaths to encourage walking, cycling and public transport use in towns and cities to reduce the need for private car ownership and use.”  BUT, when you get to the point in their policy where they specify what they will actually do, there’s no reference to measures or action that will realise the want.

The ALP’s interest in cycling seems to be limited to about a million dollars – generously tipped into AUSTCYCLE – the joint venture of Cycling Australia and the Amy Gillett Foundation “to realise a nationally standardised bike training programme”.

The Liberals appear to be running their web-server on a machine designed to respond very slowly and very carefully to any REQUEST.  I suspect it’s modelled on the riding instructions issued to Tony Abbott – respond carefully – respond slowly – and try to keep your foot out of your mouth.

But, while the German immigrants are busy stealing local club races and the ex-Pommie new Ozzie has been disappearing off the back; the Dutch have been hard at work trying to make the case for cycling as the preferred urban transport method. see – Do the Health Benefits of Cycling Outweigh the Risks?
