What a great Duo – biking and beer

It  was a good day for ten 3fidi riders at the Duo Classic, the temperature had dropped 20C from Friday, the course was a cracker, lots of fun flowing singletrack, hardly any fire road  and relatively little climbing.

The start was up the hill into Sparrow from the car park, under the new road and up some more fire road  until we finally turned into the single track – probably the longest and toughest climb of the day – my heart rate was over 170 by the time we hit the singletrack but it was worth the effort because from there we basically had a fast fun ride round Sparrow and Kowen for the next two hours with relatively little passing to be done – we probably passed 6 or 7 pairs (including James and Alwyn after 15km!) and got passed by two pairs during the whole race, the 25km lap meant there was never going to be any backmarkers to pass.

Anyway we got round without any incident – Dayn and his new 29er were definitely a bit faster than me and my old dualie but together we got round in 2hrs 30 and sneaked into 3rd place in the masters category. The next Fidis across the line were James and Alwyn who took 6th in the Masters closely followed by Greg and Brooke who were less than 30 seconds behind the winners of the Open mixed category. Bleeksie and Eliza came in next to claim 3rd in open mixed and beat Rusty and Glen to line by 7 seconds – all 5 fidi teams crossed the line within 12 minutes. All the podium getters were rewarded with cases of beer and the usual inner tubes/socks etc. All in all a good race, nothing and nobody got broken (apart from one of James’ spokes) and everyone enjoyed the duo format and the sensible temperatures.
